Trichotillomania
(trick-o-til-o-MAY-nee-ah) is a disorder that causes
people to pull out the hair from their scalp, eyelashes,
eyebrows, pubic area, underarms, beard, chest, legs
or other parts of the body, resulting in noticeable
bald patches. Trichotillomania (also referred to as
TTM or "trich") is currently defined as an
impulse control disorder but there are still questions
about how it should be classified. It may seem to resemble
a habit, an addiction, a tic disorder or obsessive-compulsive
disorder.
There
is currently no known cause for this disorder. We do
know that people with Trichotillomania generally have
a neurologically based predisposition to pull their
hair as a self-soothing mechanism. The pulling behavior
serves as a coping mechanism for anxiety and other difficult
emotions. It does not hurt and they are not trying to
damage themselves. Hair pulling is not purely a "nervous"
behavior, though it is sometimes triggered or exacerbated
by stress.
It
is impossible to predict the duration of Trichotillomania
for any individual person. Without treatment, Trichotillomania
tends to be a chronic condition that may wax and wane
in severity throughout a lifetime. Yet in some cases,
especially in infants or early childhood, hair pulling
may be a very temporary problem that begins and ends
quite mysteriously.
TREATMENT
Research
into treatments for Trichotillomania has grown steadily
over the past decade. Although no one treatment has
been found to be effective for everyone, a number of
treatment options have shown promise for some people
with TTM. Keep in mind that no single approach is best
for everyone. Children and adolescents, in particular,
have different needs than adults. You may need to experiment
with different combinations of treatments and tools
to find what works for you. Treatments include Cognitive-Behavioral
Therapy, Medications, Dietary changes, meditation, hypnosis,
prayer, yoga, and herbal remedies have all been reported
to be helpful by some individuals
